Helen Tool Cantore, born in Manhattan, NY, was the only child of her late parents, Nathan and Rose Martin. She was predeceased by her first husband, Voldemar Tool and her second husband, Michael Cantore. She is survived by sons, Karl (Sharon), William (Karen) and Richard (Diane); grandchildren, JoAnna, Raymond, Heather, and Christine; and great-grandchildren, Alina, Liam and Radley.
Growing up in Manhattan, Helen loved to skate, travel the New York City subways, swim at the Long Island beaches and attend motion picture movies.
Helen graduated from Central Commercial High School in Manhattan and attended one year of college.
Growing up during the Great Depression, she learned the importance of saving for a rainy day. When our head of household was out of work, usually during inclement winter conditions, she always found the resources to sustain the family during these difficult times.
Helen held a variety of administrative positions in different agencies including the US Department of Agriculture, the Department of the US Navy, the Department of Veteran Affairs, Creedmore State Hospital, and the New York State Board of Cooperative Education Services.
Being an active member of the Advent Lutheran Church while residing in Elmont, NY, she sang in the church choir and was a church official.
She loved all animals and they loved her. Growing up in her household on Long Island, there were always a few adopted animals residing there.
Helen loved listening to and playing music. She took lessons and successfully learned to play the organ, guitar, and piano.
Helen was a happy and joyful person that shared an enthusiasm for life. She made positive impacts wherever she lived while making many friends. She lived her last 15 years in Virginia Beach at Victoria Place where she made numerous loving and caring friends. She loved participating in group activities and enjoyed the company of her friends. She was named the “Queen of Victoria Place” by her fellow residents. Helen lived a rich, full life and is loved and remembered by all who knew her.
Funeral service will be held at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 1:00pm with visitation beginning at noon. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the VB ASPCA.
