Martin V. Kersey

Martin V. Kersey, 94 of LaPlata and longtime resident of Camp Springs, died April 29th, 2011 at Abbey Manor Assisted Living Facility. He died peacefully after battling Parkinson's Disease for many years. Born January 29, 1917, in Glasgow, Montana, he was the son of the late Curtis Roy Kersey and the late Icie Edwards Kersey. He was married for 56 years to his late wife, Nettie Vernon Kersey. He is survived by his son, J. Martin Kersey and his daughter-in-law, Jacqueline M. Kersey of LaPlata; his sister, Erma Cade of Hoopeston, of Illinois; his brother Herbert Kersey of Gibson City, Illinois and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He served his country from 1937 to 1957 in the United States Navy. He was a Veteran of both the World War II and Korean Campaigns. He finished his tenure with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He worked for the Department of Navy as an Equipment Specialist until 1973, when he retired from the Naval Ship Engineering Center. Unready to completely retire, he spent 8 years as a School Bus Driver for Prince George's County. He loved traveling, bowling, history, poetry. He was loved for his quick wit and sense of humor. He was so well-read and had such a great memory that many people considered him the smartest man they ever met. Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm on May 9th, with a service by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars at 7 pm and again on May 10th, from 11 am to 12:30 pm, followed immediately by the funeral service, all to be held at Huntt Funeral Home, 3035 Old Washington Road, Waldorf, Maryland. Burial will take place at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Abbey Manor Assisted Living, 123 Morris Drive, LaPlata, Maryland 20646
