Patricia Ann Serbinoff of Waldorf, MD, passed away on September 2, 2023, at the age of 89. Pat was born in Keego Harbor, Michigan, the youngest of 10 children born to Jacob Garret Vandenberg, Jr., and Dora Belle Bassler Vandenberg. She was the devoted wife of the late George Thomas Serbinoff and mother to their five children, and supported her husband during his federal service career in the Department of State and other government agencies.
Pat’s life was dedicated to raising her children, doting on her grandchildren (as well as her cats!), and engaging in her many interests. Youngest daughters Anna and Cathy were born in Germany during George’s 8 years as the head of U.S. Information Agency America Houses in Frankfurt and Tübingen, Germany. During their overseas postings, Pat was the gracious hostess for the numerous social events for German dignitaries sponsored by her husband and his staff. Upon returning to the U.S. and the family settling in suburban Maryland, she enjoyed working outside the home, most notably her long, much accoladed tenure in the ticket office of the Capital Center in Largo, MD, home of the Washington Capitals, Washington Bullets/Wizards and many concert events.
Pat had many passions in addition to her family - she loved anything cats, puzzling, cooking (including mastering her Macedonian mother-in-law’s zelnick pastry!), wearing lots of fun jewelry, crafting and more. She also LOVED celebrating holidays, especially her favorite - Halloween; she entertained her family with an endless variety of Halloween decorations and costumes. Her wonderful creativity was ever on display!
Following her husband’s passing in 2016, she resided at The Charleston Senior Community in Waldorf. Despite her sweet and quiet demeanor, she still managed to rock the Charleston! Rarely staying in her room, she took advantage of all the daily events on the schedule, never missing bingo if she could help it, and was the champion of the virtual bowling competition - no one could beat her perfect 300 score! She was loved by staff who frequently stopped by her room (on the rare occasions that she was there!) to say hello and also visit her beloved Claudia, the best cat ever, who let Pat share her room!
Pat is survived by her children: Peter Serbinoff of Sarasota, FL; Christine Balasi (Victor) of King George, VA; Sandra Holland (Mic) of Georgetown, DE; Anna Azmi of Sarasota, FL; Cathy Valentine (Eddie, Jr.) of Cobb Island, MD; her grandchildren Raven Valentine of Crofton, MD and Eddie Valentine, III, of Waldorf, MD.
Funeral Services will be held at Huntt Funeral Home, 3035 Old Washington Road, Waldorf, MD, on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m., followed by the service at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, MD, where Pat will be laid to rest with her late husband.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of The Chesapeake, John and Cathy Belcher Campus, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, Maryland 21122
