Concepcion Segura

August 6, 1929February 16, 2021

Concepción “Tía Concha” (aunt Concha to her family) Segura Ruiz Esparza went home to Jesus on February 16th 2021at age 91. Concha was born to Hilario and Concepción Segura on August 6th, 1929 in Mexico City, Mexico. As a child, she excelled in school and wrote romantic novels which were published before she turned 18. Concha decided to move to Washington DC in 1963, after a trip to France. She was a brave pioneer woman who chose to become a career woman and stay single, dedicating her life to her work and to her faith in God. While she didn’t have her own children, she was by far the best aunt any kid would wish, and she holds a sacred place and love in all our hearts. In addition to being an excellent writer and editor at the Pan American Health Organization until her retirement, she also loved playing chess during her lunch breaks and on weekends, becoming one of the first District of Columbia female chess champions. Concha loved collecting doll houses and doing artistic collages, even until her last months. She also was a passionate reader and cook. Throughout her entire life, she held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her. She held various volunteering roles in the Parishes where she was active, and loved to take silent retreats at Holy Cross Abbey in Berryville, WV. During the last 13 or so years she was a resident at Victory Terrace, she and her loving friend Bill Baldwin, who recently passed away too, may he rest in peace, worked together to bring the weekly communion and mass to the catholic community in the residence with the support of the priests at Our Lady of Mercy Church. Concha joins her parents, Hilario and Concepción in Heaven. She is survived by her sister, Isabel (93), and her brother, Teodoro (90), her nieces and nephews, Marcella, Ana Christina (Dario), Teodoro (Miriam), Cecilia, Beatriz and Carlos(Ana), and her many grand nieces and nephews.

Deuteronomy 33:27 “The Eternal God is your refuge, and his everlasting arms are under you.” Psalm 91:11 “For He will give His angels charge concerning you, to guard you in all your ways.” Exodus 23:20 “See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.” She will be also missed by Mónica Bolis, Fabiana Sivila, Andrew Gilmour, friends from the Community of Victory Terrace and of Our Lady of Mercy Church, and many other lasting friends she made during her life.

Dear family members of Concepción Segura,

Conchita was a frequent friend/opponent of mine over the chess board at lunch at PAHO/WHO. I enjoyed discussing our games and learning about chess together. She was a kind person who was more concerned about others than herself. I respected her and the time we shared.

Sincerely,
Thomas Yerg

Thank you Marcie for making it possible to celebrate Tía Concha’s life! I can only give thanks that all my memories of her are of joy, laughter, support, inspiration, unconditional love...Only Tia Concha would let us 4 nieces and nephew sleep with her during her visits to Mexico City when we were little. 2 heads and 2 pairs of feet on her face. “Mira Tía Concha!” Although I got older, it never seemed she did. I visited after my first tour in the Air Force, when she lived in MD, we drove to Ft. Meade to pickup my paycheck. The place was huge, we stopped a man, she asked, “excuse me SER (sir), where are the BARRRRACK’s?” “I’m sorry?” he said. “Where are the BARRRRACK’s?” again. “I’m sorry ma’am, I don’t understand you?” Me: “Excuse me, we’re looking for the barracks’s”(beriks). “Oh! They’re right over there!” Annoyed, she says, “that’s what I’ve been saying!” “No,”I said, you said, “where are the BARRRRACK’s?!” She didn’t think it was funny! Haha!
It was an oversight, but let’s not forget her other nephew “Isaac” (Br. Lucian). One time when we both visited her, she tried to “cook!” All I remember, (he can tell it best), she went to a neighbor and asked, “how do you bake a POTATO?” Lucian can share her attempt at playing billiard’s
too! I made fun of her driving, so she told me that when she bought her car, (first time, and driving too! Age 30/40 something) she’d go to the dealership everyday, but they couldn’t figure out why the STARTER kept breaking. They asked her to start it, and she held the key while turning it and started counting to 5 minutes. She said the manual (her learning guide) said to warm it up! Only she would drive INTO “Hurricane Hugo” to visit Monks in boonies in 1989, only to break ankle, stay at their infirmary (scandal!), and have me fly/drive her to DC from Charleston SC! Ha! 1993-..neighbors (6 months), Kennedy Center, New Year’s Watergate Hotel, Retreats...etc., as you wished Tia Concha...will email your song to all. Mil besos y abrazos!
