OBITUARY for CARMEN CHENARD

Waterville - Miss Carmen Chenard, almost age 89, died Sunday Feb. 21 at Glen Ridge Nursing Home in Augusta. Carmen was born in Waterville to Joseph S. Chenard and Eva R. (Giroux) Chenard on March 19, 1932. Her identical twin, Julie (Chenard) Peltz died at Oak Grove Nursing Home in Waterville on Nov. 5, 2009.

Carmen is survived by her younger brother, Robert (Bob) of Waterville; four nieces, Bernadette of California, Marina of Canaan, ME, Erika of Saco, ME (who were Bob's three daughters), and Diana (Peltz) Hufman of Phoenix, AZ; one nephew, Major Craig Peltz also of Phoenix; and several cousins.

Carmen was a communicant of Corpus Christi Catholic Parish of Waterville and a Third Order Franciscan in the local chapter as one of its founding members. She was well known as a talented artist where, for several years in the 1970's and 1980's her religious works of art appeared in the Portland Catholic Diocese of Maine publication, "The Church World." She also produced many oil paintings and was a volunteer for several priests, in particular Rev. Father Roberge, at The Blessed Sacrament in Waterville.

After graduating from Waterville, High School in 1950, Carmen and her twin sister went to work in New York City where one of her maternal aunts was a legal secretary. They later returned home to Waterville where they worked as office secretaries at Scott Paper Co., the Hathaway Shirt Co., and Diamond Match Co. in Oakland. Then a few years later both moved to the Boston area where they worked as secretaries. Carmen worked for several years as a secretary at MIT in Cambridge. When she was about 29 years old she returned to live with her elderly parents in Waterville.

A graveside ceremony will be announced during the month of May at the family plot at St.Francis Cemetery in Waterville. Donations in Carmen’s memory may be made to Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, 101 Silver St. Waterville ME 04901.
