Gloria Gayne, 87

Waterville – Gloria Dorothy Gayne, 87, passed from this life on Sunday September 3, 2017. She was born on May 18, 1930 in Benton, the eldest daughter of Madeline (Gilley) and Norman Gerald. She grew up in Belfast and Fairfield and graduated from Lawrence High School, Class of 1950.

Gloria worked in the shoe department of Butler’s Department Store in Waterville before joining Hollingsworth and Whitney which later became Scott Paper and she retired in 1985. She is remembered as a hardworking, conscientious, and dependable worker – the kind that sets the bar for having a good work ethic and inspiring others.

Gloria was a lifelong and active member of the Baptist Church. She also belonged to the Benton Grange. In her “spare” time she liked to bowl. She took a measure of pride in her lawn and she could be seen wearing a sun hat riding her mower. In quieter times she liked to crochet, play cards and take day trips. Gloria will be most remembered for being a loving and caring woman.

Gloria is survived by her two sons: Doug Gayne of Augusta; Scott Gayne and his wife Terri of Winslow; her three grandchildren: Tim Gayne, Michelle Gayne, Tyler Gayne; as well as her cousin, who was like a sister, Faylene Holt of Fairfield. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Gayne in 1998, her sister Janet West in 2017, and her long-time partner Robert Cyr in 2017.

A Grave side Service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday September 9, 2017 in Pine Grove Cemetery, 88 Grove Street, Waterville. Please visit to share condolences, memories and tributes with Gloria’s family.

For those who wish, donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Gloria’s memory to: Humane Society Waterville Area, 100 Webb Road, Waterville, ME 04901.

Doug and Scott, Cathy and I are sorry for your lost. Your Mom was a very kind, caring, and patient lady. I remember my Mom and your Mom were always talking about the kids and old times back in their school days. I'll always remember her smile and laughter at family gatherings when the kids were young. Sorry we will not be able to make the burial. Take Care

Gloria was always having fun during her bowling with the "Primetimers" league at what was "Riverside Bowling Center" in Waterville. Such a winning personality! I shall miss her laughter and her smile!
