Barbara “Bobbie” Jean Bernhard (Gainey), went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 13, 2020 at the age 89. She was born in Shreveport, LA on January 19, 1930 to Richard Ernest Gainey Sr. and Mabel Mae Meek-Gainey. She was raised by her grandparents, David Ferris Gainey and Barbara White-Gainey. She was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Marine Corp Private, Richard Ernest Gainey Jr who died in the battle of Okinawa in World War II.
Barbara gave her life to Christ, in the year 1944, at the age of 14 during a summer church camp. She was a faithful church member, served in the choir, and spent time in Asia, Europe, North and South America ministering the gospel.
Having gained a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Louisiana College and a Master of Religious Education from Southwestern Theological Seminary, she became a dearly loved and highly sought after teacher, retiring with over 35 years of educating students.
Highly gifted as an artist, Barbara, was creative with all she did but most notably with sketching, painting, and pressed flower art. She also enjoyed reading and was an amazing cook.
Next to Jesus, William Sidney Bernhard Jr. “Papa”, was the love of her life and preceded her in death. She was a devoted wife for over 46 years. Barbara was the mother of three children. She was known as “Nana” to her seven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, William III and Debbie Bernhard, Richard Bernhard, and Barbara and Dale Dezell; Grandchildren and their spouses, William IV and Nadia Bernhard, Christy and Spencer Burkhalter, Sharill and Josh Lowe, Theresa and David Rocabado, Helena and Terry Collins, Lonn and Tina Harwell and JD Harwell; seventeen great-grandchildren and many other dearly loved family and friends whose lives Barbara had impacted.
Funeral service will be held 10:00am on Friday, January 17, 2020 at Forest Park East Funeral Home 21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster, TX 77598. Graveside committal service will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, January 16 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home.
