January 22, 1930 – February 7, 2019
Neva Lou McClain 89, of Brookdale Oak Hollow Memory Care, passed away on February 7, 2019.
Neva was born on January 22, 1930 in Sugar Land, Texas, to Ethel Maude Douglas and Joseph Terrell Patterson.
On her daddy's death in 1937, her mother bought a two-story house in Houston and took in boarders. After Neva's mother became ill, her Aunt Gladys and Uncle Vernon gave her a home and sent her to school. She spent summers in Gatesville, staying with Terrell's brothers and sisters. She graduated from Charles H. Milby High School in Houston. Neva worked for Equitable Life with Clayton's sister, Matalie who introduced them. After the children were in school Neva earned an Associate Degree in Elementary Education and taught Pre-K at Broadway Baptist School. She acquired a real estate license and for several years managed their Bay Real Estate company. Neva finished her working career as a secretary for Exxon USA.
(This is what our dad wrote about mom in the genealogy book he published. She helped proofread everything!)
Neva was a member of Park Place Baptist Church for many years until she and Clayton moved to South Main Baptist in Pasadena, Texas. In both churches she was involved in many groups; but really enjoyed visiting the homebound. Neva was a longtime volunteer with the apartment ministry in the Medical Center of Houston. She and Clayton also liked to travel in their motorhome.
Neva McClain was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Ethel; her sister, Betty Virginia; and husband, Clayton.
She is survived by her children, Kathie (Floyd) Mayberry, Bruce (Vickie) McClain, and Mark (Lori); along with her grandchildren, Stacy Mayberry, Joshua and Sarah McClain, Kate (Michael) Borrero, and Jenna McClain.

Neva Lou always had a smile of an angel. She loved Jesus and it showed.
I got to know Neva best when she dropped by my mom & dad's( Reba Henry Speights and Rudy Alton Speights) home in Houston. It was during their later years while they were mostly housebound and in poor health. She would come bring some Marigolds to plant in the flower boxes by the back gate and by the front sidewalk. She would plant the flowers and visit awhile. I was in my 50s and would be there taking care of my folks for a spell. I lived in East Tx.
She and I took a road trip to visit relatives in Florida in the early 2000s. She told me all about growing up and living at my grandparents house. I will always treasure the stories she shared about my mom and grandparents.
The Lord blessed all of us who got to have Neva Lou in our lives. I know I grew closer to the Lord because of her.
She is at peace now and hugging all her family with her in Heaven.

I had the joy of knowing Neva through our Jane Long Chapter NSDAR. She was our Hostess Committee Chair when I first joined. She was so dedicated in her DAR Service to God, Home, and Country. As the current Regent of Jane Long, please know that we loved her and we will honor her memory in or Yearbook and at our Annual Memorial Service. Heaven is rejoicing and many National Society DAR ladies are welcoming Neva !
