David “Dave” Smith, 73, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines with private inurnment of his cremated remains at Resthaven Cemetery.
Dave was born in Carroll, Iowa the son of Henry and Wilma Smith. He grew up in Glidden, Iowa and lived for many years in Osage, Iowa where he married Charlene Peterson on April 10, 1970. He was the hospital administrator and a volunteer firefighter, serving for five years as fire chief. Dave and Charlene moved to Des Moines in 1993 and he worked for Wellmark until retiring in 2006.
Dave loved the time he was able to spend with his grandkids. He played in bridge groups in Johnston and Grimes and enjoyed breakfast and lunch gatherings with his dear friends.
He is survived by two daughters, Julie (Chris) Dunham of Johnston, Iowa and Heather Goeders of Clive, Iowa; three grandchildren, Amara Dunham, and Noah and Ben Goeders; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special friend, Mary Wilke. Dave was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 40 years, Charlene; brother, Dale Smith; and his sister, Mary Lou Taylor.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel. Memorial contributions may be given to the Iowa Firefighters Memorial, P.O. Box 7, Traer, IA 50675.
