Nicholas H. Roughton

Nicholas H. Roughton, 38, passed away unexpectedly October 23, 2023. No services are planned at this time.

Nick was a graduate of Ames High School and attended the University of Iowa. In December of 2022, he received an associate's degree in Cyber Security from DMACC, completed numerous certifications and then began his IT career at DMACC's data center. Nick pursued many interests. He was an enthusiastic biker who enjoyed the trails around Des Moines and joined RAGBRAI twice. He enjoyed cooking Asian food. Nick was an avid reader and especially enjoyed fantasy novels in the style of JRR Tolkien. His facility with the English language was impressive and included a wonderful sense of humor. He also enjoyed playing and listening to music, with a particular taste for the music of bands that enjoyed their greatest popularity before he was born, especially the Beatles and the Kinks. Movies and live theater were another avocation for him. He was a frequent patron of the Fleur Theater, the remodeled Varsity, and DMPA. Nick was a kind and generous friend.

Survivors are Nick's mother Karen (George) Lawson of Ames, his father Michael (Rebecca Colton) Roughton of West Des Moines, his brother Geoffrey Roughton of Olathe Kansas, and step-sisters Sarah (Cal) Lawson of Des Moines and Katherine Lawson of Golden, Colorado. Also survived by aunts, uncles and his dear cousins of all generations.
