On Friday, October 11, 2019, Robert Thompson, passed away at the age of 90. Bob was born on December 11, 1928. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Drake University in Des Moines and served in the Armed Forces of the United States. On June 16, 1956, he married Leila Shelton, they had two children, Lynne and Jack, 4 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
Bob was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He was a proud veteran and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict where he obtained the rank of corporal. Bob was defined by his faith in Jesus Christ. His heart was dedicated to the mission field and he served on the mission board and was a choir member at Des Moines First for over 50 years. Bob was a dedicated tennis player who was a member of the Drake University Varsity tennis team and was a 50-year member of the D Club. In his later adult life Bob enjoyed participating in many Senior Olympic games and was inducted into the Senior Olympics Hall of Fame in 2012, receiving many gold medals in tennis, free throw shooting, and ping pong. Everyone who met him was touched by his kindness and generosity.
The family appreciates the kindness of the care Bob received from the staff at Bishop Drumm and Mercy Hospice for the last 7 years of his life.
Bob is preceded in death by his loving wife, Leila and survived by his daughter, Lynne (Tom); son, Jack (Laura); grandchildren, Joe (Laura), Matt (Inisha), Sammi (Andy), and Claire (Brock); and seven great-grandchildren, Tenley, Emma, Arya, Jensen, Josh, Sterling and Sadie.
