Geraldean Hurd Vafiades (November 29, 1924 – August 1, 2020)
Harwich, Ma. – Geraldean (Geddy) Hurd Vafiades died on August 1, 2020 at the age of 95. She was the wife of Venizelos (Ben) Vafiades (who predeceased her in 2014) for 67 years.
Geddy was born November 29, 1924 in Dexter, Maine, the daughter of the late Roland and Evelyn Hurd. She graduated from Bangor High School in 1943 and attended the Maine School of Commerce. She worked in various secretarial positions in the Bangor area. She met Ben, who just returned from WWII after having served in the Air Force, and they married on March 15, 1947.
Ben’s work, as business analyst serving clients throughout New England, resulted in the couple moving often to various communities in all of the New England states except Vermont. Geddy was a stay at home Mom for 16 years before she returned to work. Her last position was as an administrative assistance for an architectural firm where she became very proficient at computers.
Geddy and Ben retired to Harwich, Cape Cod in 1982. They spent 25 winters at a number of sunny communities in Florida. Geddy enjoyed the outdoors including skiing, camping, the beach and especially golf. She was a proud member of the Cranberry Valley Golf Course and the women of the CV-9 League fondly called her “the judge” (due to her detailed knowledge of the rules). She loved bridge and was a “shark” due to her competitive spirit and excellent playing skills. She was a member of the Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary, the Red Hat Ladies Society and a former volunteer of the Harwich Community Center. Geddy is survived by her daughter, Vendean, her spouse Julie and granddaughter, Alexandra of Portland, Maine and her son, Vincent, his spouse Cheryl and grandson, Vassor of Bradenton, Florida. Due to current community health concerns a family celebration of life may be held at a later date.

The DiDominicus Family would like to extend our deepest sympathies for the loss of Geddy. Geddy was our mother's cousin and we know that they were pen pals for many years. We loved her mother Evelyn, who was a stand in grandmother to us in California. We will certainly donate to the Alzheimer's Family Support Center in her name.
All our love, Nick, Toni and Robin DiDominicus

The Powers family was saddened to learn of Geddy's death. She, Ben, Vincent, and Vendean were wonderful "across the street" neighbors in the 1960's in So. Portland, Maine. Geddy and Pat Powers, age 97, have remained in touch until now. Their phone calls were likely not short ones.Geddy was kind, fun, positive, and outgoing. Her laugh was memorable. We are so sorry that Vincent and Vendean have lost such a fine mother. We know they have wonderful memories of their parents. Our best wishes go to them.
