HARWICH- Thomas P. Mellett, 84, died peacefully on Friday, March 1, 2019 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth. He was the beloved husband of Margaret (Kelly) Mellett, with whom he shared 51 years of marriage until her passing in 2006.

Thomas proudly served on the Gearing class Destroyer USS Perry 844 as a radarmen 2nd class during the Korean War until he was honorably discharged in 1957. He was a graduate of Saint Thomas High School and continued to achieve a masters degree from Northeastern University. Prior to his retirement, he spent his career working as a 5th grade Randolf teacher, basketball coach and mentor to countless students.

In his retirement, Thomas enjoyed working and golfing at Cranberry Golf Course in Harwich, bringing daily candy deliveries to Ethan and Lindsey (no, he didn’t help pay the dentist) and corresponding (with actual letters) with former students and co-workers.

Thomas is survived and will be deeply missed by his son, Paul Mellett and his wife Cathy, and Paul’s two children Ethan and Lindsey; grandchildren Keryn and Megan Mellett of Olympia Washington; a sister, Mary Burns, and a brother, Joseph Mellett; as well as many nieces and nephews.

I got to know Tom from his frequent visits to Brooks Free Library. We were both teachers and I had a great time talking with him, and getting books for him that were not in the library. He was a true gentleman and I shall miss him. I grieve with you and your loss.
