Sara Angel Altman

Towson, MD - On November 23, 2018 Serafina Angel Ann Altman (DeVito), born April 14, 1933 in Elmhurst, Queens passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Daughter of deceased parents William and Mary Devito; Survived by her brother Dominick, and sister to deceased Fury, Nicky, and Mary. Beloved wife of 65 years to her high school sweetheart, Henry; Loving mother of six children: Joe (Cindy), Bill (Debbie), Betty (Phil), Mary, Hank (Patty) and John (Deanne). Proud grandparent of seventeen grandchildren: Steven, Suzanne, Jennifer, Karyn, Megan, Billy, Emily, Victoria, Justin, Austin, Alaina, Paige, Kristen, Hope, Henry, Brooke, and Carly and five great-grandchildren: Aydan, Kayla, Dylan, Brody and Samuel; Beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Sara grew up in Woodside, NY and attended Bryant High School where she met her sweetheart of 70 years, Henry. After graduating, she worked as a stenographer for John David clothiers in New York City, and attended college for one year. After marrying Henry in 1953, they moved to a home in West Islip, NY for almost 35 years, and lovingly raised six children where she enjoyed cooking, sewing, family travel including a cross-country trek to Alaska and Mt. Mckinley park with 5 children in the family-made camper/bus, being an active member of the Catholic church, and a passionate gardener with both flowers and vegetables; family functions were a hallmark of her life. Sara obtained her Real Estate Broker license and successfully worked for the Housing Exchange in Brentwood, NY in the mid-1980s. After retiring in 1994 to Georgetown, Indiana Sara founded the Lighthouse Prayer Blanket Ministry at Graceland Baptist Church. Not only did she and her team of ladies sew the blankets, but they prayed over each and every one. She hand delivered them to Hospice. Sara also was faithful in baking for the Prison Ministry at Graceland. She made it her duty to visit her sick friends and often gave friends a ride to church events. She was an amazing Grandma to her own grandchildren and adopted a few more in the neighborhood. She was faithful, loving, and kind to everyone she met and especially her family. She shared her faith in Jesus as her mission here on Earth. Most recently, Sara reconnected with the Catholic Church in the Baltimore, MD area where she and Henry spent their remaining days together surrounded by family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sara’s name to the Lighthouse Prayer Blanket Ministry of Graceland Baptist Church of New Albany, Indiana. www.gracelandbaptist.org/giving
