Known as Hap, he was born June 13th 1934 in New York City and passed away peacefully November 11th 2018 in West Palm Beach with family members by his side. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dianna (Dede); Daughter Kim (Nick) Raich; sons Greg (Sharon) and Jeff (Cathy); grandchildren Beau (Lindsey), Brooke and Brianna Raich; Kenny (Amanda) Lewis and Kristen (Jason) Baxter and great grandsons: Bradley and Brett Lewis; John Raich and Landon Baxter.
In 1957 Hap graduated from The University of Florida with a degree in Architecture. In 1961 he and Carroll Peacock formed Peacock and Lewis, Architects and Planners, Inc. During his partnership there the firm is credited with over twelve hundred projects totaling almost two billion dollars in value ranging from single family residences, commercial projects, health care, institutional and country club projects. Notable projects include; JFK Medical Center, St. Mary’s Hospital, Associate Architect for Phillips Point, Flagler Center and Mayacoo Lakes CC. In 1992 he formed Lewis & Associates to do projects of his own choosing.
Also that year Hap was ordained an Episcopal Deacon. His ministry was to be an advocate for people in need; since he served on many boards, committees and organizations he was able to appeal to the people who could help them the most. He was an ATO, President of AIA Palm Beach and State Director, National Episcopal Cursillo President, owned Gallery Worth Avenue, was a Bishop Gray Inn Foundation Trustee and was involved in so many others! When asked to join a board, he became a leader, helped it grow and moved on! He was president of Palm Beach County Habitat for Humanity for over 10 years, freely did the plans for over 149 homes and several ‘villages’ and helped it move to a new level. His Bishop sent him to be Deacon in charge of St. George’s Church (twice) in Riviera Beach, and St. Patrick’s Anglican Church for several years each. He served and chaired many Diocesan committees and was on the staff of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church where his resting place will be in the Columbarium he designed. He has received numerous honors and awards; as an Architect elevated to be a Fellow (FAIA) and made a Canon in the church for his service.
He has been the CEO of St. George’s Center for the past 18 years having originally helped set up the Center. Folks are fed mid-day and evening meals, receive social services with help from over 800 volunteers from churches, synagogues and various organizations.
To honor his life, he requested donations to St. George’s Center, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Habitat for Humanity or a charity of your choice – helping others is his legacy!
A Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving for Life will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Saturday November 24th, 2018, at 10:00 am; 211 Trinity Place West Palm Beach, Fl. 33401.
