She and her family emigrated to America in 1956 where she married and had four children. She raised her children in Westfield New, Jersey where they were members of Temple Emmanuel and she was involved with the Sisterhood.
Sonia later relocated to South Florida where she lived near her parents, sisters and adult daughters. In Florida she worked as a receptionist, and continued to volunteer her time to charitable organizations. She was an active member of Temple Judea of Palm Beach Gardens, where she enjoyed attending Shabbot services.
Her home was always open to friends and family to gather for celebrations or to share a cup of coffee...a piping hot cup of coffee.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Mercedes is survived by her children, daughter Lisa Lowi; son David (Amber) Lowi; daughter Jessica (Jay Plotkin) Lowi; and son Jeff (Ginger) Lowi; sister Solange Katowitz, brother Maurice Assayag, brother Jacques Assayag, sister Marie Feldman, brother Armand Assayag and brother Albert Assayag; granddaughters, Melissa Vineberg, Jemma Lowi and Kaelan Lowi.
