Stamatios Nicholas Thanos (Steve)
1935 - 2020

The son of Nicholas Stamatios, Samos Island, Greece, and wife, Evangelia Lourou, he came to America alone at age 17 on scholarship. Steve received his BSEE from CCNY in 1957 and his M.S.E.E. at Columbia University in 1959. He married Cynthia Anne Baldwin the same year. Steve worked at CCNY, first as a laboratory assistant, and then as a lecturer in the Electrical Engineering Department, then worked for Columbia University as an engineer. He was later involved with the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package, that went to the moon for measuring moonquakes. Steve then designed and produced the instruments for those multiple purposes. In the late 60's S N Thanos with Gary V. Latham founded Rockland Laboratories for the design & manufacture of digital and analog filters for industry and the geophysical sciences. The company began to expand from a garage operation to a two room project, with major investment of venture capital from GE. Steve and Cynthia were divorced in 1971. In 1973, Steve married Brenda Turner. The company later became Rockland Systems and merged with Wavetek, with Steve remaining as a regional vice president. After some years in various other branches of the electronics industry Steve became a business consultant and a desktop publisher of technical in-house newsletters and product catalogues, for Pentek Corp, a company founded by his colleagues Rodger Hosking and Danny Shama. He and Brenda relocated from Pennsylvania to Royal Palm Beach Florida in 1999. Steve continued his consulting up to the age of eighty three when he retired.

Steve is survived by His wife, Brenda after 47 years of marriage. He had two children: William and Evangeline 3 Grandchildren: Corey , Crystal and Jason, and two Great-Grandchildren: Luella and Kai Nicholas. Steve will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor, his optimism, business acumen, independence and love of family.
