This picture was the day she had given me full confidence that I would succeed in my dreams. My 18th birthday/going away party. That day was so special to me, it impacted me beyond anything. She gave me words of wisdom about the military. She told me “no matter how much I want to quit or how much I want to give up”, she continued “keep fighting, keep getting better and stronger than before, you will make it because when there’s a will, there is power”.

Dear Mendez Family, I did not personally have the honor of knowing Yolanda. I read her obituary and was awed by what a wonderful person she must have been...two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and serving at Ground Zero after 9/11. God has a special place in heaven for her. Please accept my sincerest sympathies in your loss. She sounds like one grand lady.

Tía Yolanda,

Just 6 yrs ago we meet. From our first encounter, you made me feel like I had been part of the family for years. Thank you for all your love and kindness, for inviting us to the Cuban Club to dance at New Years Eve, for making us feel at home whenever we visited.... I can go on and on. You will be dearly missed.

In writing your orbitisry, I learned so much more of you. From the tours you did at war, to the Purple Heart 💜 you received in serving our Nation, the kindness you gave to so many, and the many you helped by finding them jobs and helping them start a new life; about 8,000 to say the least. Truly a Phenomenal woman.

R.I.P. Tia Yolanda
