Cornelis (Cory) Dirk Crompvoets, of Westminster, California, passed away on Monday March 18, 2019 surrounded by his family after battling a form of leukemia. He was 84 yrs old, born on July 5th, 1934 in Ponorogo, Indonesia.
Cory grew up in a large family with 23 brothers and sisters. When he was 24 yrs old he was drafted into the Dutch Army for two years and then joined the Merchant Marines. During this time he sailed to many ports around the world. In 1949 he left Indonesia and sailed to the Netherlands to look for new opportunities. Little did he know his best opportunity would come to him from his sister, Franjse. Shortly after Cory left Indonesia, Franjse followed her brother to the Netherlands.
Irene Sutherland, and her younger brothers, were on the same voyage and shared a cabin with Franjse, Cory's sister. When Franjse met up with her brother in the Netherlands, he asked her if she knew of any young woman she could introduce to him. Franjse introduced her brother to the young lady that shared a cabin with, Irene Sutherland.
And so it began. Cory & Irene were married in city hall on July 11th, 1958, Maastricht, Netherlands and again on July 12th in the Catholic church in Maastricht. They later moved to Rotterdam for a brief time before sailing to the United States.
Cory & Irene arrived in Los Angeles, California in 1959 and began their life in the U.S. Soon their daughter and son were born, Sandra & Charles and in 1966, Montgomery followed. In 1972 they moved from Hollywood to Westminster.
Cory worked many years for a large plastics manufacturer in Los Angeles. In 1978 he became the American dream of an entrepreneur and opened Western Illuminated Plastics (WIP) in Westminster, CA. WIP continues to operate today under his wife, son, daughter and son-in-law.
Cory was a voracious reader, skilled photographer and a passionate writer. Over the years some of his landscape photos were published in local newspapers. His children will fondly remember the numerous financial and political articles he shared with them over the years, and now the stories of his life that he wrote for them.
For all of his talents and drive to build a successful business, nothing was more important to Cory then his family. They spent time camping, hunting, shooting and playing cards. Their youngest son, Monty passed away in 1983 after battling cancer. As sad as this time was, their first grandchild, Monty was born in 1985 and he gave them a new focus on family. Years later they would be blessed with two more grandchildren, Madison and Chase. They will all remember their dad and Opa's generous heart, love and support for his family, his church (Blessed Sacrament since 1972), his pets and the many homeless people and charities he supported over the years.
Cory is survived by his loving family: wife, Irene Sutherland, Westminster, CA; daughter, Sandra Katanjian, nee Crompvoets (Tom), Westminster, CA; son, Charles Crompvoets (Kelly), Anaheim Hills, CA; grandchildren, Monty Katanjian, Madison Crompvoets; sister, Franjse Crompvoets Baldenschwieler the Netherlands and numerous family members around the world. Last but not least, his beloved dogs, Maggie & Minnie.
He is preceded in death by his son, Montgomery Daniel and grandson, Chase Daniel Crompvoets.
