April 21, 1934 ‒ September 9, 2020
A man of both faith and science, Paul Scherer lived these qualities in his family and as an accomplished engineer.
Born April 21, 1934 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, he developed an early love of mechanical things. Specifically, he loved model airplanes and won many trophies for his skills in making and flying them. His education followed this path, with a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University.
These degrees led to his life’s work in the aerospace field, working for NASA at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and Lockheed Martin in Colorado. His field of expertise was satellite guidance and control systems on various satellites. His family and friends benefited from his engineering skills, whether in house remodeling, working on a car, bike, or building a playhouse. He enjoyed the challenge of finding the solution to any problem he found, and fixing it. We called him “Mr. Fix-it!”
Besides his skills in aerospace engineering, he had a passion for old cars. A friend in New Hampshire owned a Model A, and when work took Paul to Boston, he was able to visit and work on the friend’s Model A. From this friend, he obtained a 1930 Model A Ford Coupe. He had great pleasure updating and driving it, a replacement Coupe, and a 1930 Model A Town Sedan, with the Denver Model A Club. The Town Sedan was his pride and joy!
Paul discovered God through college friends, which led to involvement in InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Working in an InterVarsity Camp led to his meeting his wife, Nancy. They married in 1956 and had three children, Susan, Carol, and David. Throughout his life, Paul was committed to his Christian faith, leading Bible studies and active in church life. He challenged himself to read the entire Bible each year, a task he did for 15 years. During his long struggle with prostate cancer, he longed to be home with his Savior.
We will miss his dry wit, his wise counsel, and steady character. He is now at peace — finally at home.
Paul is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nancy; daughters Susan and Carol (Andy) Scheer; and son, David; grandchildren Erica Narwold (Matthew) and Karl (Kate) Scheer; great-grandchildren Juliet, Lucy, Lily, and Evangeline Narwold; and sister Lorene Blair (Michigan).
A memorial Celebration of Life will be held Monday, September 21, at 1:00 p.m. at Arvada Covenant Church, 5555 Ward Road in Arvada.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Model A Ford Club of Colorado, P.O. Box 5554, Terminal Annex, Denver, CO 80217.
