Don was in ROTC and graduated Penn State University in Forestry. He was married to Gerry (Miller) and they had three children: Robert Port, Donald Port and Sandra (Pennell). Don and Gerry had seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Golden. He mapped the eastern seaboard before landing in Golden working for the USGS at the Denver Federal center as a civil engineer, joining the American Society of Photogrammetry. He worked on top secret jobs for the government, spending time working in Alaska, while a medal of achievement from the Secretary of Interior under Ronald Reagan was his biggest honor.
Don started his love for flying by building radio controlled planes and flying them at his leisure. He then went on to build sailplanes an airplanes while becoming a member of the Rocky Mountain Soaring Association, Aircraft Owners, Pilot's Association and Experimental Aircraft Association. He became a member of the United States Marshall's Posse.
Don was quite a fisherman and built a sailboat and owned numerous motor boats. A member of the NRA, avid hunter, outdoorsman and guide & outfitter, while climbing most of Colorado's fourteeners. He was a wonderful leader, father, friend to all and will be greatly missed.
