

Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Crestview Memorial Park, Garden of Inspiration, with Reverend Richard Rust of Faith Freewill Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 7:00 Friday evening at Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home.
Mr. Rogers was born February 24, 1926 in Palestine, TX (Anderson County) to Clyde R. Rogers, Sr. and Lorene Colleen Rogers. He graduated from Henrietta High School in 1947. Clyde married his soul mate, Helen Ruth Merrell in El Paso, TX on April 14, 1951 and they honeymooned in El Paso and Truth or Consequences, NM. They were best friends as well as marriage partners. They loved to dance together, play cards (Gin Rummy and Pinochle) and travel. They went to the Red River in New Mexico at the end of August every year. In their lifetime, they owned three homes. Together, they traveled to all of the states west of the Mississippi River and all of states south (except South Carolina), They even went to a few New England states and to Washington, DC.
“Skinny” began with the Post Office on August 24, 1948 and was a letter carrier for 31 ½ years. His best memory was taking a letter to a daughter whose parents lived in Alaska. The letter allowed the daughter to know that her parents were alive after an earthquake in Alaska. He carried mail on the east side for six years and started when stamps were 3 cents!
“Skinny” served in the U. S. Navy in the Blimp Corp Lighter than Air during World War II and was discharged on June 6, 1946. He was in the ground crew working on blimps. Clyde was a member of the BPOE (Elks), the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the National Association of Letter Carriers, life member of the NRA , life member of the Texas Rifle Association and a life member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He bowled for 45 years and was in the Model “T” League and the Service League. He won second place in the state for doubles and singles. He partnered with Edd Calloway. “Skinny” loved cooking and was considered by many to be a gourmet chef. He loved sharing his gourmet goodies with his neighbors, especially his “stoup” (stew). His wife, Helen, loved his chicken n’ dumplings the best.
Survivors include his wife, Helen of Wichita Falls; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce J. Groves and Joseph M. Groves; nephew, James A. Groves and his family; his dog, Suzi, who he loved very much and numerous first and second cousins. Preceding him in death were his parents and a nephew, Robert Groves.
