Iris was born in Moosomin, SK and was a farm girl in the Maryfield area and Fleming. She settled in Winnipeg after the War, working at Picardy’s and then at the Royal Alexandra Hotel. She later worked for the head office of Canada Safeway, retiring in 1991.
Iris married Terry Sawiak in 1947 and together they raised a blended family. They loved to dance and travel throughout Canada and the US in their camper. She was an excellent gardener and cook, and prided herself on a clean house and doing everything meticulously.
Iris was predeceased by her parents Oscar Hanson (Venaas) and Margaret Hall; sister Irene and brother Leslie; husband Terry in 1991; and all his brothers. She leaves behind sons Ronald Sawiak, Wayne Hanson; daughter Sherryl (Jim) and grandsons Matthew and Christopher Melsted, many nieces and nephews.
A special thank you is owed to the staff of Seine River Retirement Home where Iris spent many happy years; Sophie Ramer of Palliative Care for her guidance and patience; dedicated WRHA homecare workers; Dr. R. Choptiany for going the extra mile; and the loving, caring staff of Jocelyn House Hospice where Iris ended her 15 month trial with cancer.
Mom did not want a funeral. Cremation has taken place.
