OBITUARY

David William Zacharias

June 5, 1934March 11, 2020

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Dave Zacharias at the age of 85 years. He leaves to mourn his beloved Kathy, wife of 62 years and son Russell. Dave grew up near Horndean in Southern Manitoba. As a young man he came to Winnipeg in search of employment. He was hired at T. Eaton’s Co. to work in the warehouse at Alexander docks, in shipping. Later he moved to the new facilities in St. James, and then in 1980 came to work at the St. Vital Store. Dave retired from Easton’s in November of 1993. Dave firmly believed in physical activity, particularly team sports, played outdoors, organized for girls and for boys. He coached soccer teams for several years, then became involved in organization, including team competition across Canada. During his retirement years, he was involved at the Soccer Complex, at Curling Club at Lindenwood Manor and at Bethel Place. Dave managed the Soccer Complex on Waverley for many years. Dave, an avid curler, organized and curled in senior men’s league, for years, at the Pembina Curling Club. Dave was a devoted Christian. He accepted Christ as his personal savior as a young man and was baptized on confession of faith at the Plum Coulee Bergthaler Church. Dave will be missed by those in Bethel Community, his curling and soccer buddies, folks in the retirement residences and cousins, nephews and nieces. Dave passed away in the evening of March 11, having suffered a stroke earlier in the week. The family would like to thank the personnel at HSC for their attentive care during Dave’s short stay. A memorial service celebrating Dave’s life will be held at Bethel Mennonite Church, 465 Stafford St., Winnipeg, at 2 pm Tuesday, March 17, 2020. A private interment is scheduled.

Kathy and family,

My sincere condolences to Dave's family. Although I do not know the family, I have known Dave through curling for many years. We met in the Pembina Curling Club locker room three or more times a week as well as on the ice. I considered Dave a friend and will miss him. His passing hit hard. I have struggled with the decision to not attend Dave's memorial service. Being at an age almost similar to Dave's and living in a condo of older people, I felt it prudent not to attend. I wish I could be there.

I appreciated seeing Dave, in church on Sunday mornings and at the curling rink during the winter months. His warm smile and cheery disposition were always uplifting . I will truly miss him. My condolences to you Kathy.

I am sorry for your loss.

I will miss Dave as a friend. I always enjoyed his smile and friendly
competition in curling. His quiet leadership will be missed by many at the 55Plus Pembina Curling Club, and the Stick Curling Club.
