Dr Newman Lloyd Stephens

February 28, 1926October 29, 2019

We are sad to say that Dr. Newman Stephens—“Steve”—passed away on the night of October 29, 2019 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He died peacefully at the age of 93 in the presence of his family.

He is survived by his sons, Alex and Danny; grandchildren Carlo, Sacha and Jaya; sisters Helen, Enid and Iona and their surviving children, Louis, Ian John, Robert, Terry and Janet. He is also remembered by his daughter-in-law Eliane; brother and sister-in-law, Bruno and Marta; nephews and nieces in Brazil; and his godsons, Mark and Cesar. He is also remembered by his—and our—dear friends here in Winnipeg and across the world, and his many former students and research colleagues with whom he rejoiced in the sharing of knowledge as a path to lasting friendship.

Having lived such a long life, Steve is predeceased by many deeply cherished friends and family, but none so beloved as Dr. Carla Concone Stephens, his partner in life who passed away in 2001, too soon before her time.

True to his wishes, Steve’s remains will be cremated in a private ceremony, and we will bring together his friends and family to celebrate his life on November 9 at 2:00 pm at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home.

Further information will be provided about donations to a worthy cause.

Thank you for being the best mentor anyone could have. You really did change the direction of Andrew’s life. I had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people. Also got the chance to travel. My trip to Iceland was unforgettable. Loved all the social gatherings at your home. So so many good memories. You were a kind and humble man and I am so grateful you were part of my life.

Dan and I send all our love to our dear friends Al and Danny (and their families) on the passing of Dr. Stephens, their beloved father. Steve was always an inspiration to all of us 'youths' (your often weird but wonderful friends) who had the privilege and pleasure of having known him. He will be missed by those of us who fondly remember our adolescence growing up in Winnipeg. Deepest condolences and love from Nandita (Mohuya) and Dan in London, Ontario. We wish we could be there to pay respects in person.
