It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Erwin Mertin on June 1. 2019 at St. Boniface Hospital.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter Linda Mertin, (Tim Gutheil) grandson Devin Harder, great grandson Steven Harder, Solange Sookram and friends and staff at Luther Home. He was predeceased by his wife Irmgard Mertin and his brothers Ewald, Erich, Edmond, Earhart, Egart and sister Elsa.
Erwin was born in Maidan, Ukraine on March 6, 1928. He came to Canada in 1950 and worked in his trade as a baker at several business before taking a position at McGavin’s Bakery where he retired after 30 years. He was self taught in English and always talked about how Canada was the best country in the world. His younger years were spent traveling the country he loved, dancing, skating, bowling, fishing, camping and tinkering around the house. But over the years his simple pleasures were walking, reading and playing pool with his grandson Devin. Erwin was a cheerful, kind gentle spirit. He was a true gentleman and will be sincerely missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the caring staff at St. Boniface Hospital and Luther Home.
Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service be be held at a later date.
