Margaret Mary (Marg) Beauchene Makins Coppers passed away in peace to join her heavenly family on December 5, 2022. She was born October 23, 1925 to Dr. Fredrick and Cecilia Beauchene, the oldest of three girls. Margaret Mary attended St. Paul’s School, St. Joseph’s Academy and Marylhurst University in Lake Oswego, Oregon.
Margaret Mary married her high school sweetheart Ted Makins in 1947. They lived in San Francisco where Ted was attending dental school while in the Navy. Later they were stationed in San Diego and then the Philippines at Subic Bay. While there they were able to visit Hong Kong and surrounding areas.
Margaret Mary and Ted returned to Yakima where Ted started his dental practice. They had five children, Pat, Molly, Meg, John and Monica. Summers were full of great adventures to Long Beach, Hood Canal and Lake Chelan. Some of those trips involved sinking boats and cars . . . In 1971 the family unexpectedly lost Ted to cancer.
Raising five children (ages 5-16) was a challenge that she rose above with grace and faith. Her home was open to their friends, many she considered family and was always willing to pull up another chair.
In 1975 Margaret Mary married longtime family friend, Alfred (Bud) Coppers. Bud brought two more children into the family, Jean and John. They were married 39 years until Bud’s passing in 2013.
Marg lived a beautiful life filled with family, great friends, interesting travels, golfing and playing bridge. She had a love for art and design in home/garden, and avid collector of Asian art and hand-crafted items from around the world. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Yakima Valley Museum, Larson Gallery and McKinley Elementary where she and Bud both enjoyed helping children in the reading lab.
Her last years were blessed with extra loving care from her daughter Monica and granddaughter Jordan. We all made the most of covid lockdowns watching home movies era 1932 and Hong Kong in 1952 while she narrated and captured each moment with wonderful detail.
She is survived by her children, Pat (Vicki) Makins, John Coppers, Meg (Dave) Irwin, Jean Coppers-McKenna, John (Jerrilyn) Makins, Monica Makins and daughter-in-law Mary Makins. Her adoring grandchildren, Adrian, Charlie, Chelsea, Elliot, Chap, Ian, Jordan, Lena and Doug. Great grandchildren, Beauchene, Penelope, Margaux, Theo, Ellis, Hailey, Preston and Molly. Marg is preceded in death by her parents, loving husbands Ted and Bud, her sisters Theresa Strecker and Joan Beauchene and Margaret’s daughter, Molly Kipp.
Margret Mary’s faith was strong. She had an incredible ability to deal with adversity and loss and still find a way to look at things in a positive light.
The family wishes to thank the loving and compassionate care givers at Fieldstone Adult Family Home along with the Memorials hospice team.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be made to Yakima Valley Museum, Larson Gallery or a charity of choice. A memorial mass will be said on Saturday January 28, 2023 at 12:00 At the St. Paul Cathedral.
