Jay was born in Gadsden, Alabama August 3, 1933 the seventh child of Carl and Cora Ethel [Wright] Limbaugh. Jay spent his early years in the area around Gadsden, Alabama where he attended the local schools. After his mother died in 1945 Jay went to live with his father in Washington, D.C. where he graduated from Eastern High School in 1951. After he graduated from High School Jay enlisted in the Army, serving in the paratrooper corps [Company G, 503th Air Corps] from 1953 to 1955 with stations at Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Jay was honorably discharged from Fort Campbell, Kentucky as a Corporal in June, 1955. When he was discharged from the Army Jay received an invitation from his sister Mary Nell to come to New York City and visit her. Jay went to New York to visit Mary and fell in love with the city. He was a New Yorker for the rest of his life. While in New York Jay worked for Olivetti Corporation and as a graphic artist. In the late 1950’s Jay met Frank Schwind who became his lifelong partner and soul mate. Jay assisted Frank with his interior design business and real estate ventures, and together they purchased a country house in Bearsville, New York. For many years Jay and Frank split time between their apartment in Manhattan and their home in Bearsville, gaining a wide circle of friends in each location. In the mid-1970’s Jay and Frank opened Pappagallo Ice Cream Parlor in Woodstock, New York, which they operated for several summers after that. Jay was well known for his dry humor and quick wit. He was exceptional at freehand drawing and was an avid fan of big band music.
