William Elmo Bradfield

He was the son of James David Bradfield and Annie Lambert Bradfield born February 16, 1921 in the Long Cane district of Troup County. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 68 years, Carolyn Moncrief Bradfield and son, Robert Lewis Bradfield, his siblings, James David Bradfield, Lynda Claire Bradfield Arrington, Frances Bradfield Brown Hollis and Robert Sydney Bradfield.

He served for 3 years in World War II as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. He was discharged from active duty in late 1945 with the rank of Captain. He also served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve until 1963 with the rank of Major. During WWII he was in the Troop Carrier Division of the Air Force in the China, Burma, India Theater where for 15 months he transported troops, ammunition, medical supplies and food, mostly by parachute drops, to American, British and Chinese troops fighting in the jungles of Burma and western China. He also participated in the transport of troops and supplies “Over The Hump” from India to China.

He was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange where he served many years as a Deacon and as an Elder. He worked for Callaway Mills and Milliken and Company in several capacities for 49 years. He retired from Milliken and Company in 1989 as a Product Manager in the Marketing Department of the Carpet and Rugs Division. He was a member of Highland Country Club for over 60 years where he served as President and enjoyed his favorite pastime of golf. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years. After the death of his wife he moved to Vernon Woods Retirement Community where he enjoyed the company of many residents and staff.

He is survived by his son, William Thomas Bradfield and his wife, Joan Gamble Bradfield; grandson, William Judson Bradfield and his wife, Jordan Nemiroff Bradfield, and grandson, Benjamin Thomas Bradfield; brother, Joe Lewis Bradfield and his wife, Jeanine L. Bradfield; various nieces and nephews.

A private family memorial service will be held at Shadowlawn Cemetery.
