Lois Brandon Maxwell

Carrie Lois Brandon was born on August 9, 1924 in Clay County, Mississippi to Arthur Clarence and Viola Marshall Brandon. She was the sixth of nine siblings. She departed for her heavenly home on March 30, 2021 while living in Birmingham, Alabama at Briar Glen Alzheimer’s Special Care Center.

After graduating from Woodland High School in 1942, Lois worked at various jobs in Houston, MS including Horn’s Grocery and a five and dime also owned by the Horn family. During World War II, she worked at an ordinance plant in Prairie, Mississippi. After she had saved enough money, Lois boarded a bus for Memphis, Tennessee to attend Draughon’s Business College. Upon her graduation, she began a career at “The Daily News”, a legal trade and finance paper in Memphis. She began as a court reporter and eventually moved into office management. During her time working with the paper, she met her future husband, Fred Maxwell. They were married on May 9, 1959, until departed by Fred’s death on September 30, 2008.

Lois was an avid student of the Bible and read it faithfully each day. She was known to be a meticulous record keeper and her financial records read like a daily diary. Like many who grew up during the Great Depression, nothing went to waste in her household. She was generous to those in need and often headed projects in her Sunday School class that helped young girls living in children’s homes. She also joined in projects undertaken by the Shriner’s organization with her husband. She was described by those who knew her as sweet, kind, and funny. She was quick to stand up for those who she thought had been wronged in any way. Her husband often said she should run for political office of some kind.

She is survived by her only child, Karen Maxwell McGee, and her son-in-law, Jeff McGee of Wetumpka, Alabama; her grandson, Brandon McGee of Las Vegas, Nevada; her granddaughter, Jamie McGee of Wetumpka, Alabama; and one great-grandchild, Riley Maxwell McGee of Las Vegas. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her eight siblings: brothers Boyd, Russell, J.L., Joe, and Jimmy Brandon and sisters, Frances Kilgore, Sadie Davis, and Eloise Gordon.

Visitation will be held at Parkway Funeral Home on Thursday, April 8, 2021 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, and the funeral service will be Friday, April 9, 2021 in the Parkway chapel at 1:00 pm with visitation one hour prior.
