Dixon Barnes Brown Jr.

Mr. Brown died Saturday, May 29, 2021, peacefully in his home. Born in Columbia, SC, he was a son of the late Dixon Barnes Brown, Sr. of Darlington, SC, and Miriam Elizabeth Spears Brown of Lamar, SC. Dixon served in the Marines and was honorably discharged. He attended Georgia Tech and worked as a computer programmer in private practice and for the State of South Carolina. Dixon loved fishing and hunting, and was a skilled outdoorsman on family land in Calhoun County for most of his life. His passion for learning was expressed in all of his conversations and writings. He was an exceptional chess player and enjoyed facing a strategic competitor more than the actual win. He had an incredible sense of humor. He was an avid reader, a fierce protector and a true animal lover.

Surviving are his son, Dixon Barnes Brown, III; daughters, Gwynne Goodlett (Toby) and Wendy Muzzy (Sean); grandchildren, Madeline Goodlett, Spears Goodlett, Broderick Muzzy, and Caleb Dixon Brown; nephews and niece, Barry Burton, Robert Dixon Burton, Elizabeth Foster, and William Burton. He was first married to Jacqueline Hansen Dinge and later married to Janice Park Rivers.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his grandson, Breckin Riley Muzzy, and sister, Elizabeth “Betsy” Thayer.

The family wishes to thank his Hospice Nurse, Debra Cook, and caretakers, Latasha Hook and Vanessa Wimbush, for the kind, thoughtful care that they gave him later in life; Jan Rivers for her love and kindness in treating his children as her own for nearly four decades; and Grier Rivers and Shantell Rivers Graziano for joining Jan and loving the family dearly.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Breckin Muzzy Interim Scholarship at S.C. Governor's School for Science & Mathematics to support traveling students. Information can be found at www.scgssm.org/Breckin.

The family will receive friends at a reception, following the service, at the Palmetto Club.
