Thomas "Tom" Buttram

NORTHPORT – Thomas “Tom” Buttram, age 77, died June 7, 2021 at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2021 at Memory Chapel Funeral home with burial following in Memory Hill Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Catherine (Herring) Buttram and Lee A. Buttram and his first wife, Beverly “Toolie” (Stripling) Buttram.

He is survived by his wife, Linda (Russell) Johnson, a sister, Pat Buttram and nephew, Taylor Hogg of Hayden, Alabama, a step-son, Christopher D.L. Johnson (Susan Gorin) and two grandsons, David Johnson and Oran Johnson all of Chattanooga, TN.

A member of the Holy Trinity Holy Cross Orthodox Church in Birmingham, AL, Tom received his doctorate from the College of Education at the University of Alabama. He worked as the Director of Student Services in the College of Nursing for many years. A tireless advocate for all students, he loved his work and following retirement returned to the University to work in the Athletic Department as an Academic Advisor, working with athletics in several different sports through the years.

Tom also served as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps Reserves for six years.

A devoted University of Alabama sports fan, he was known for his wonderful wit, humor and kindness to all. Tom was an amazing gardener and an excellent cook. He is beloved by many friends and family who will always cherish their memories and times together.
