Irene McClure Hinson

COLUMBIA -- A graveside service for Irene McClure Hinson, 94, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2021 in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Thursday, June 17, 2021, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mrs. Hinson died Tuesday, June 15, 2021. She was a daughter of the late Harriet Abercrombie McClure and William McClure.

Mrs. Hinson received her bachelor’s degree from Columbia College and Masters of Education from the University of South Carolina. She taught for 10 years at Hyde Park Elementary and had been the principal at Denny Terrace Elementary for 15 years, and belonged to several education sororities. She received commendations from the S.C. House of Representatives in 1986, from the Columbia Chamber of Commerce in 1987, and the Urban League for 1984-1985. She was a long-time, very involved member of Earlewood Baptist Church.

Mrs. Hinson is survived by two sons, Richard Hinson (Connie) of Columbia, William Hinson (Kathie) of Gilbert; a stepdaughter, Kathy Bowen (Johnny) of Columbia; four grandchildren, Chris Hinson (Cheryl), Whitney Axsom (John), Clayton Hinson, and Courtney Weagle (Benji); numerous great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; first husband, Robert D. Hinson, and second husband, James T. Ballew; brother, James A. McClure; sister, Joe D. Carder.
