LEXINGTON - A graveside service for William “Bill” Ernest Aycock, 96, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 22, 2021 in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
Mr. Aycock passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 16, 2021. Born in Atlanta, Ga. on January 2, 1925, he was a son of the late William Ernest and Elizabeth Lillian Cannon Aycock.
After completing high school, he was drafted and served in the U.S. Navy for three years. He was a radio man, first class, with a rank of SV6. He was part of the defense of France during WWII and was called back at the last minute from Northern France (Normandy) to Southern France.
After serving in the Navy, he went to Emory University in Atlanta on the GI Bill, obtained a Law Degree and successfully passed the Bar Exam. He served in the Federal Government as a Special Agent in the FBI for 30 years until his retirement. After retiring from the FBI, he worked with the VC Summer Nuclear Plant as an investigator for 10 years.
Bill was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbia for 50 years, where he faithfully attended the Open Book Sunday School Class and worship services, as well as serving as an usher. He especially loved the Christmas and July Fourth celebrations.
He is survived by his children, Susan Aycock Watts (Sam), William E. Aycock Jr. (Robin), John David Aycock (Gay), Robert Andrew Aycock (Anna); 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren (with another on the way!). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty White Aycock; a sister, Wetona Steven; and a niece, Joan Steven.
Bill was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be missed for his love and devotion to his family and his wit and generosity. He will forever be in our hearts and his legacy will be all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the Healthcare Center staff at the Presbyterian Home in Lexington, S.C. for the compassion and care shown to Mr. Aycock and our family.
