Martin E. Baker, 86, of Lawnton, passed away Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg. Born in Harrisburg April 9, 1926, a son of the late Joseph Baker and Margaret (Eckert) Baker. He was so proud to be an American and always flew his American Flag.
He was a graduate of the former Harrisburg William Penn High School, class of 1944. Mr. Baker proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. A WWll veteran with the 76th Infantry Division as first scout he was awarded the bronze star, the combat infantry badge and one battle star for Central Europe. He spent 1969 in Vietnam serving as a civilian where he wrote a secret report on the High Use of Inventory (spare parts for downed tanks) for General Abrams. He retired from the Federal Government.
He was a life member, past commander, and chaplain of American Legion Post 1001 Harrisburg. Life member and past commander of VFW Post 710 Steelton; a Past Chef De Guerre and President of V-269 40 & 8; a Life member of Sixth Street Clover Club, Harrisburg; a Life member of Amvets Post 286, Rutherford; a Member and past commander of VFW Post 1718; and active in Dauphin County Council and the Districts of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, John Baker, Leroy Baker, Lawrence Baker and Helen Mentzer, and the love of his life, wife, Joy Livingston Baker.
He is survived by two daughters, Debra A. Weber, of Wertzville, and Cheryl Baker, of Enola; three granddaughters, Tracy Pyle, Wendy Masson and Kacey Baker; six great-grandchildren, Logan, Landen, Miller, Shaw, Drew and Maryn; as well as a sister, Dorothy, of Hummelstown; a brother, Joseph, of Harrisburg; and brother-in-law and best friend, Ronald Livingston, of Lawnton.
A viewing will be held at 9:30 AM Friday, November 2, 2012 and the Funeral Service at 10:30 AM in the Neill Funeral Home, 3501 Derry St., Harrisburg. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
