METCALFE, Eda (Edie) Alice; aged 96, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2012 at Langley, BC, where she had been living at Langley Lodge for the past six years. Edie was born in Limerick, Saskatchewan, on November 2, 1916 to Albert and Alice Schmidt; she was the youngest of three siblings - her brother, (Albert) Herman (married to Evelyn) passed away June 8, 1973, and her sister, Isabel, passed away January 3, 1972.
The Schmidt family lived on a farm until the children were of school age, then moved into Limerick, where Edie's father was a drayman. Although they lived on the edge of town, they stabled the horses, kept a garden and had a workshop. It was after moving to town that the three children, including Herman, had their long locks cut and saved by Edie's mother, Alice, along with a myriad of other memorabilia from the children's youth. Edie never quite left her prairie upbringing as she was heard to say "so many trees, you can't see anything because of all the trees."
Edie was married to Jim Metcalfe on July 23, 1940; they met and married in Saskatchewan, but spent the majority of their life in Vancouver. It was always a very special time when Jim and Edie returned to the prairies for a visit. Edie worked for many years for (Simpson) Sears. She had also trained as a hairdresser and piano teacher in her younger years. Jim predeceased her November 13, 1999.
Edie always had a very unique sense of humour and a very loving, caring demeanor, which endeared her to us all. She is lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews, as well as many friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at Henderson's Langley Funeral Home on Saturday, December 8, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Langley Care Foundation, 5451 - 204 Street, Langley, BC. V3A 5M9.
