Donald W. Copley, age 77, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a long courageous battle with Progressive SupraNuclear Palsey (a degenerative brain disease). He was the beloved husband of Irene (Simoes) Francis Copley. To whom he had been married for 46 years.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late Robert and Lillian (Sutherland) Copley, he had lived in New Bedford since 1966.
Mr. Copley graduated from BMC Durfee High School in Fall River and was a US Navy Veteran, serving his country for 15 years. He was an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic retiring from Polaroid. Following retirement he worked for various other companies in the area before completely retiring due to illness. He loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their sincere heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Royal of Fairhaven for the wonderful care he received while he was there.
Besides his wife he is survived by his beloved children, Bruce A. Francis and his wife Lucy of Dartmouth, Corinne Turner and her husband Marc of New Hampshire and Darlean Spangenberger and her husband Paul of Texas; three beloved grandchildren, Alyssa Francis of New Bedford, Joshua Turner and his wife Ashley of New Hampshire and Sarah Turner also of New Hampshire; a sister, Janice Knowles; two brothers, Robert Copley and his wife Rita and Charles Copley and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Arlene Cabucio, Phyllis Cardoza and Douglas Copley.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral service Friday, December 14, 2012 at 10:30 AM in the ROCK Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. Military honors will follow in the funeral home. Visiting hours, Friday 9:30-10:30 prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his honor may be made to, Cure PSP, 30 E. Padonia Rd., Suite 201, Timonium, MD 21093.
