He was born August 19, 1921 in the Mt. Hebron community of McDowell County, NC to the late Garland Knupp and Cora Jolly Knupp.
Lester was a WWII veteran having served in the US Navy in the South Pacific, in the Soloman Island, Guadalcanal. He served in the military from 1942-1946. He worked 37 years and retired from Old Fort Finishing.
In addition to Lester’s parents, he is also preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and David Knupp; five sisters, Ruth Bean, Mable Hemphill, Irene Effler, Geneva Bean and Arcie Knupp; and one daughter, Penny Knupp Brooks.
Surviving Lester are his wife of 61 years, Hilda Allison Knupp; his son, Kim Knupp; a son-in-law, Jimmy Brooks; two granddaughters, Jennifer Brooks, Amy Brooks Deyton and husband, Darren; one grandson, David Lawing; one brother, Clifford Knupp and wife, Rebecca; and one sister, Rachel Simmerson; and many nieces and nephews.
Lester was always a basketball fan. He played on the Old Fort High School Championship team of 1939. He was a #1supporter of McDowell Girls Basketball team, missing very few games. He was also a great fan of UNC Tarheels.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Mt. Hebron Wesleyan Church with Rev. Todd Hinson officiating. Burial will follow at Cherry Springs Memorial Park. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the church.
