Virgil Smithers, 60, of Raleigh, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Duke University Medical Center. Virgil was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Virgil was born in Harrisonburg, VA, on April 2, 1952, to the late Marshall Donovan Smithers and Eleanor Duke Smithers. He was educated in the Kannapolis, NC school system and was a 1974 graduate of Wake Forest University with degrees in English Literature and Political Science. He was a member of Sigma Epsilon fraternity.
Following graduation, Virgil started his career with the NC Historic Sites Section and in 1987, founded his own video production company, Multi Vision Productions, which he operated until the time of his death.
Virgil is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Linda Gail Smithers, and daughter, Sarah Marshall Smithers of the home. He will also be greatly missed by his canine buddy, Bucky.
He is survived by his sister, Jackie Smithers of Ann Arbor, MI; and two brothers, Wayne Smithers of Houston, TX; and Robin Smithers of Concord, NC. He is also survived by two nieces and a nephew.
Virgil was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. He was an accomplished photographer and had a life-long passion for literature and music.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Baptist Church, Raleigh, on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. followed immediately by a private inurnment at the church. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:30 in the main sanctuary. Dr. Jeffery Roberts will officiate.
