He was a native of Dyersburg, TN. Upon high school graduation he joined the Navy in 1940, where he initially served as a medical corpsman. He was later transferred to the V12 Program at the University of Louisville, where he studied medicine. At the end of World War II and his discharge, he completed his degree in chemistry and married the love of his life, Patricia. He had a 33-year career as a chemist at International Harvester. His hobbies included fishing, square dance calling and travel with his wife. He was a member of Buechel United Methodist Church, where he served in different capacities.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia L. Witherington of 63 years; and a grandson, Scott A. Witherington.
Surviving and cherishing his memory are his children, Dr. Katherine Witherington, Joseph Jr. (Joyce), James (Cee) and Deborah Witherington; grandchildren, Eric, Mona, Megan (Keith), Sheila, Adam; and great-grandchild, Leah.
A celebration of Joseph's life will be conducted noon Wednesday, March 27, 2013, in the Chapel of Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, with entombment in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013 and 10 a.m. until the service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
