Mr. Richard J. Corcoran, age 68, of Rowley, died on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at his home after a 10-month battle with cancer. He was the husband of Carolyn M. (Thornton) Corcoran, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Lynn, he was the son of the late Michael and Dorothy (Kane) Corcoran. He graduated from St. Mary’s Boys High School, Lynn, Class of 1962, and was co-captain of the football team in the 1961 season. He then attended St. Anselm’s College and graduated from Northeastern University. He lived in Rowley for the past 39 years.
Richard joined the United States Marine Corps in 1964, and served in Vietnam where was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart.
From 1968 to 2008, Richard worked as a production manager at General Electric Company, first in Everett and then in the River Works Plant, Lynn.
He coached Pop Warner in Lynn during the 1966-67 season. He was instrumental in forming the Rowley Youth Soccer League, which became the Triton Youth Soccer, and was a coach for 10 years. He also served for seven years as a League Town Director. He was a past member of A.O.H. Division 10, Lynn, and of the Rowley V.F.W. Post 5707. He enjoyed cribbage and poker, gardening, reading, cooking, traveling to Ireland, and playing with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife he leaves two daughters Kathleen “Katie” Diamond and her husband Tony of Hamburg, NY, and Colleen Ferrarini and her husband Thomas of Bradford, two sons Sean Corcoran and Terrence Corcoran both of Rowley, his siblings Priscilla Corcoran, Michael Corcoran and Margaret Wilson all of Lynn, William Corcoran and his wife Kathi of Winthrop, and Lawrence Corcoran of Malden. He leaves his grandchildren Sophia and Gabriella Ferrarini and Matthew Diamond, his step-grandchildren Nathan Diamond and Carrie Diamond, his mother-in-law Gertrude Thornton of Peabody, a sister-in-law Bette Andre and her husband John of Peabody, a brother-in-law John Thornton and his wife Mary of Naples, FL, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home 157 Maple Street, Lynn on Wednesday at 9:00 AM. Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, Lynn at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends invited.
