Vicky was born in Toledo, Ohio and grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. She attended Tudor Hall School in Indianapolis and Elmira College in New York. She lived in Massachusetts for most of her adult life, and met her future husband there. She also spent part of every summer at her family’s cottage on Great Cranberry Island, Maine. She was married to her husband there in 1970.
Vicky worked as a newspaper reporter, a fund-raiser, and, after earning her MBA degree from Simmons College in Boston, she worked as a budget administrator for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In 2009, after she and her husband both had retired, they moved to Portland, Maine.
Vicky enjoyed sailing, gardening, cooking, and many other pursuits. She volunteered for several charitable and non-profit organizations over the years, such as Habitat for Humanity, the League of Women Voters, and the Colonial Dames of America. In the Great Cranberry Island community, she devoted her much of her time working for the Historical Society, the Library, and the Tennis Club. Vicky was also very active in the churches she belonged to, both in Andover, Mass., Portland, Maine, and Great Cranberry Island.
Vicky is survived by her husband of 42 years, Chris Johnston; her children, Margaret (Meg) Johnston of Tewksbury, Mass. and Alexander C. Johnston of Hoboken, New Jersey; her sisters, Holly Hartley of Berkeley, California and Grace Hartley of Indianapolis; her daughter-in-law, Kathryn Valenta and her granddaughter, Olivia Johnston of Hoboken.
There will be a memorial service at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke (143 State Street, Portland, ME) on Saturday, April 20 at 3pm with a reception to follow. Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland.
