George was born on Dec. 27, 1941, in Jefferson, NJ, the son of George A. and Ida M. Poyer Willey. As a young boy he moved with his family to the South New Berlin - Gilbertsville area and was a graduate of the Gilberstville High School. A veteran of the United States Army, George served his country during the Vietnam War. He was the recipient of many service medals including the Bronze Star. George was a long-time employee of the Norwich Shoe Co. He began his employment with the company during his high school years and, following his service to his country, returned to Norwich Shoe, remaining there in the position of supervisor until they closed. He then gained enployment with Electron Coil, from which he retired.
George was never idle and was considered a master of all trades. He was well liked, had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed entertaining. His cooking skills were no secret, and his mac and cheese was a big hit. Most of his cooking was done without recipes, and no one ever knew the true ingredients. He was a true movie buff, liked to read, enjoyed all kinds of guns and knives,and was a nature enthusiast who enjoyed all kinds of animals.
On May 21, 2012, in Norwich, he married Nancy Eicke who survives. Beside his wife Nancy of Norwich, he is survived by his children: Lindsay Drake and husband Jason, Philip Willey, and Alexander Willey and wife Krystal, all of Norwich; his step-children; Cynthia Eicke of Syracuse, Beth Dean and husband Greg of Norwich, and Eric Eicke and wife Julie of Charlotte, NC. Also surviving are his sister, Margaret Wheatley of Tulsa, OK; his brother, Charles Willey of Cassville; his grandchildren: Leighann, Stephen, Ryan, and Ariyana; his step-grandchildren, Hudson Eicke and Hayden Eicke, and nieces and nephews, along with his special friends James Haggerty and Don and Kathy Osborne.
At George's request, there will be no formal services, and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
