Robert Elmo Jones, Sr., 84, of Ashland, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014. Born in Lynchburg, Virginia January 18, 1930, he was the son of the late Herman Snead Jones and the late Carrie Foster Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Schreck of Wisconsin to whom he was married 57 years; his son-in-law, Jon Bach and four brothers, Fred Jones, Herman Jones, Jr. Ebbert E. Jones and Dick Jones, and one sister, Elmira Jones White. Robert is survived by two sisters, Helen Jones Riley Ross, her husband Charlie Ross and Betsy Jones Jamerson, her husband Kenneth Jamerson, both of Lynchburg; one brother, Steve Jones and his wife Ann Jones of Orlando Florida, along with three sisters-in-law, Jeane Jones of Lynchburg, Conjeta Jones of Baton Rouge, La. and Marie Jones of Crewe, Virginia. He is also survived by his children, Cathy Bach-McElroy (Bill), Mike Jones (Melissa), Bobby Jones (Amy) and Nancy Salley (John); his grandchildren, Allan Bach (Cate), Robbie Bach, Riley Jones; his step grandchildren, Andrew Salley, Meredith Salley, Joe McElroy (Laura) and his special joy, his great granddaughter, Grace Bach.
Bob graduated from E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, Virginia. He joined the U.S. Air Force at the beginning of the Korean War. After returning from his military service, he was an engineer with Sperry Rand in Charlottesville, VA until his retirement. “Big Bobby” had a love for baseball, old gospel hymns, and family picnics on the mountain. He was very happy to recently join the First Baptist Church in Ashland. His craftsmanship can be seen all over the town of Ashland, including the screen porch where he, his dog, Henry, and Nanny enjoyed spending many pleasant hours on the swing. A memorial service will be held at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia on Friday, February 7 at 3:00 p.m.
