Gary Lee Wombacker , born June 14, 1950, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2014, only three weeks after being diagnosed with lung cancer. He is survived by his only sibling, Kaye Wombacker Scoggin, and her husband, Lew LeClair, and their family, his nephew Bay Scoggin, and his girlfriend Paula Hickson.
Gary lived most of his life in Dallas, where he grew up as a star athlete in track and field. He graduated from Berry College in Rome, GA with a bachelor degree in accounting. From an early age, Gary showed a strong interest in learning and became a voracious reader. His love of knowledge served him well his entire life and he became a daily reader and subscriber to a myriad of newspapers. He enjoyed and spent much of his free time to review of news articles and many books on history and politics. Gary also remained interested in sports and he was an appreciative fan of both the Dallas Mavericks and Texas Rangers, and a fierce supporter of many regional high school and college teams, about whom he could recite many pertinent details of both their successes and failures.
Prior to his retirement in 2011, Gary worked for a number of years in the air conditioning business and previously had a lengthy career in accounting. Following his retirement, Gary used his quick mind and keen memory in interesting discussion and frequent games of bridge with his friends at his apartment community. His friends and family knew that any conversation with Gary would be informative and thought provoking and they had best be on their toes if they chose to challenge his knowledge of Dallas history.
Gary will be warmly welcomed to the hereafter by his parents, Bay and Rena, and by his grandparents and many aunts and uncles. His caring nature and sweetness will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A graveside service will take place 2pm Sunday, March 2, at Restland Memorial Park.
