Elkins, Hubert W. “Treb” 81, of Louisville, KY passed away on Monday, March 10th at home surrounded by his family. Hubert was a member of the Flaget Alumni Association, graduating in 1952. He was a member of the VFW Post 6182.Hubert retired from the U.S Army & KY Army National Guard with 39 years of service, serving in Korea and with the 2/138th FA Battalion in Vietnam. He also retired from Churchill Downs where he served 15 years on the security staff. Hubert enjoyed spending time with his family. Whether it be a summer vacation at the beach, watching his grandchildren at their various sporting events, the annual Derby party in the backyard, or watching a U of L game on TV, it didn't matter as long as his family was around him. Hubert also enjoyed working in his garage, where he could be found many a day smoking a cigar and deciding which project to start next.Hubert was preceded in death by his parents Hubert D. and Mary Bertha Elkins. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Barbara Johnson Elkins, his children: Michael (Gwen), Douglas (Donna), Stephen (Shannon) Elkins, Kathryn (Paul) Heines, grandchildren: Ashley, Travis (Amanda), Alex, Shawn, and Savannah Elkins, Josh, and Katelyn Heines, great grandchildren: Azlyn and John David Emerson, brother-in-law: James ( Mary Ann) Johnson, sister-in-law: Edy Johnson, cousins: Tom Casey (Carol), and Jack Casey (Sharon), as well as several nieces and nephews.Our thanks goes out to the caregivers at Hosparus of Louisville for their help during our trying time. Special thanks to Sarah and Danielle for their hard work and support.Hubert's funeral mass will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, March 13th ,2014 at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 3509 Taylor Blvd., with the burial at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, March 12th 2014 at Arch L. Heady funeral home, 3601 Taylor Blvd.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hosparus of Louisville and The American Cancer Society.
