James (Jim) Robert Harlock, age 57, of Oxnard, CA, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2014, from complications related to cancer. Jim was born in Oxnard, CA on March 23, 1956 to Robert and Patti Harlock. His siblings included elder brother, Steven George and sister, Susan Anne. Jim was a third generation Californian and the second generation to be born in Ventura County.
Jim lived in Ventura County for the first twenty years of his life. He attended grade school in Ojai, CA. His family then moved to Ventura, CA and he attended Anacapa Middle School and graduated from Ventura High School in 1974. Jim then attended Ventura Junior College for 18 months after high school.
Jim enlisted in the US Coast Guard in August 1976. He became a member of the Honor Guard at USCG Tracen at Alameda, CA. He served at the Loran Station of Yap Island and also served on Guam. Jim trained at the Journalism school at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN in 1978 and became an Information Specialist. His final tour of duty was in Honolulu, HI at the Fourteenth District USCG for the Public Relations office, until his honorable discharge in June 1982.
Jim moved to the Midwest in the late 1980s. He worked for over a period of thirty years in the transportation industry in Iowa and Missouri and became part owner of an intermodal company in Fort Dodge, IA. Jim retired in 2011 and moved back to Ventura County.
Jim was a member of Lion Clubs International of Maui, HI. He was an avid photographer, both amateur and professional, and could always be found with a camera in his backpack. Jim was on the high school water polo team and enjoyed watching the sport whenever he could. He could be found bidding at auctions for additions to his unique antique collection while he lived in the Midwest. His largest collections had vintage cameras and memorabilia from both world wars of the previous century.
He is survived by his father, Robert George Harlock; sister, Susan Anderson, her husband, Mark, of Clarinda, IA; nieces, Michelle (Harlock) Ballard and husband Steve, of Henderson, NV; Vanya (Applebee) Walker and husband Timothy, of Orlando, FL; Elizabeth Anderson of Clarinda, IA; nephew, Liam Walker, of Orlando, FL; multi-decade sweetheart, Kathy Jackson Padden, of Port Hueneme, CA; and canine friends, Penny Lane and Perla.
James was preceded in death by grandparents, George and Alma (Armstrong) Harlock, Daniel and Irene (Chapin) O’Grady; mother, Irene Patricia (O’Grady) Evans; brother, Steven George Harlock; and nephew, Daniel Chapin Anderson.
Private interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, CA.
