Raised in Monticello, Kentucky, she began taking piano lessons at a very early age and served as the pianist for the First Christian Church in Monticello. In 1935, she married David F. Guthrie. They moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1944 where she worked as a secretary for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and he enjoyed a successful banking career with the Bank of Oak Ridge. They retired in 1981 and enjoyed socializing and golfing with friends and spending the winters in Tallahassee with family. Her husband died in 1988 and she remained in Oak Ridge until 1998 when she moved to Tallahassee to be close to her family.
For the next fifteen years, Margaret’s strong will and independence allowed her to live on her own as she enjoyed a busy social life. Even as her health declined over the last year, she insisted on living on her own and with assistance from her great granddaughter, Stephanie Guthrie, she was able to do so. For that, the family is eternally grateful.
She loved music, dancing, cooking, knitting and needlepoint. But more than anything, she loved her family. She will forever be missed by those she leaves behind.
She is survived by her son, Gordon Guthrie (Barbara), three grandchildren, David Guthrie (Lori), Sharon Bragg (Cecil), and Douglas Guthrie (Lisa), all of Tallahassee; a step-granddaughter, Dana Jackson of St. George, Island, and Carol Culbreth, the mother of her grandchildren. She also leaves behind eleven great grandchildren, several great, great grandchildren, and many devoted friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, David Guthrie, her parents, her brother, David Hale Tate, a grandson, Don Guthrie, and a step-great, great grandson, Vance Ketzel.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 7th, from 6-8pm with a celebration of her life on Thursday, May 8th at 2pm, both to be held at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home on Riggins Road in Tallahassee, Florida. Donations may be made to Covenant Hospice.
Arrangements under the direction of Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, Tallahassee, FL.
