Mrs. Katherine White Duffey: Mrs. Duffey of Mountain Brook, Alabama, died on Thursday, June 5, 2014. Mrs. Duffey was the widow of Brigadier General William W. Duffey. She was born in Birmingham on December 19, 1920 and graduated form Phillips High School. Mrs. Duffey received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Howard College in 1963, a Masters of Arts in Education (Guidance and Counseling) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1973, completed courses at the University of Montevallo to become a Registered Psychometrics for the State of Alabama, and completed further studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham to become an Alabama School Administrator.
In 1963 she was employed by the Jefferson County Board of Education, taught elementary students, and served as Principal at Vestavia Hills Elementary East School for five years when she retired to serve as a Homemaker.
Since 1951, Mrs. Duffey was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, was Chairman of the Church Administrative Board, President of Trinity United Methodist Women, and served her Church in many positions. She was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and a Lifetime Member of the Twentieth Century Study Club. She was a member of The Club and supported numerous organizations and charities.
In 1943, Gen. Duffey returned from overseas on a 30 day military leave and they were married before he returned to the European Theatre. She is remembered for her devotion to her husband and family, and for her concern and caring for others. Her greatest joy was entertaining family and friends in her home.
Mrs. Duffey was preceded in death by her daughter Mary Duffey McKibbin and is survived by her son, William Wilson Duffey, Jr. of Birmingham; and grandchildren William Clifton Duffey and wife Jennifer of Nashville, William Patrick Duffey of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Robert W. Gwin, III and wife Trisha of San Clemente, California, John Scott McKibbin and wife Katie of Birmingham, Dr. William Blake McKibbin and wife Linda of Waynesboro, Virginia, Richard Rowland McKibbin and his wife Candice of Birmingham, and namesake Mary Katherine McKibbin Greene and her husband Mac of Birmingham. Also, Mrs. Duffey has eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a special friend, her Sister¬-in-Law Carolyn Duffey Smith.
Mrs. Duffey’s family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Trinity United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be Tuesday, at 3:00 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church, with burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
