Bob was born October 24, 1927 in Glen Ridge, NJ to Edward A. and Frances (Fitzgerald) Theurkauf. He grew up in Montclair, NJ and graduated from Montclair High School. In October, 1944, the day after his 17th birthday, he enlisted in the Navy Air Corps, where he trained as a pilot before the war ended.
After a few semesters at Duke University as part of his naval training, Bob enrolled at Princeton University and graduated in 1950. He said his best legacy from Princeton was meeting his wife, Justine (Tina) Farrell, in Woodstock, Vermont at a joint Princeton/Smith College ski weekend. Bob and Tina celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past January.
Fresh out of Princeton, Bob joined the firm of Scudder, Stevens & Clark, investment counselors, in 1950, where he remained for his entire fifty year career. He started as an oil analyst and was transferred to the firm’s Los Angeles office in 1962. In 1972 he was called back to New York and appointed the firm’s head of equity research. He later chaired the firm’s investment policy committee and served on its Board of Directors. Following Scudder’s acquisition of The Japan Fund, Bob served as its president.
Horses were an important part of Bob’s life. He learned to ride as a child, and once settled in Los Angeles, the family got involved in riding and showing. Bob himself rode in horse shows until he was in his 70’s. In the 1980’s he was president of the Greenwich Riding and Trails Association.
He is survived by his wife, Justine (Tina); daughters Sarah Boyle of Stamford, CT, Susan Howe and husband, Rick Howe of San Diego, CA; Amy Reed and husband, Rolon Reed of Katonah, NY; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; as well as a brother, Dr. Edward A. Theurkauf of Chester Springs, PA; and a sister, Joan Hayden of Bala Cynwyd, PA. He is predeceased by a daughter, Lydia F. Theurkauf; and a brother, Thomas F. Theurkauf.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made in his name to the Lewisboro Library, PO Box 477, South Salem, NY 10590.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday, June 23, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 469 North Street, Greenwich, CT; followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 399 North Street, Greenwich, CT. If you wish to leave an online condolence please visit www.leopgallaghergreenwich.com
